Paper mache is an exciting and sometimes overlooked medium that embodies fascinating ideas about craft, preciousness, ephemerality, and play. This class explores a range of paper mache materials, techniques, and presents historical and contemporary examples of artists working with the medium. Students will use wire, paper, canvas, and acrylic paint to create three-dimensional artworks that blurs the line between sculpture and painting. We will explore and compare wall-mounted and freestanding structures, learn to construct a wire armature, explore methods of developing form and volume, and experiment with approaches to surface design.
