Private Group Programs
Are you looking for a creative and memorable experience to celebrate a birthday, family event, or a friends’ weekend away? Call us to plan something today! Enjoy a half-day (3-hour) or full day (6-hour) private class with an Art Colony artist/instructor. A two-week advanced planning notice is required.
A variety of options are available from sculpture to printmaking and art tours. The Art Colony also hosts a variety of associations and groups for conferences.

- 1/2 day class (3 hours) = $65/person
- Full day class (6 hours) = $130/person

Relief Printmaking: Cards or Fabric
Learn to carve in linoleum or woodblock, and then print a series of cards or decorate a fabric of your choice. This class is available as a half-day or a full-day class.
- Supplies: $20/person
Suminagashi
Suminagashi, or “floating ink,” is the process of marbling plain paper with water and ink to transform it into a vibrant and colorful design. It originated in Japan as early as the 12th century. Create your own unique print and learn more about this art form.

Cast Metal Sand Mold | Aluminum Pour
Create and carve your own design into a bonded sand mold. Then experience pouring metal to create your one-of-a-kind relief sculpture.
- Supplies: $60/student
Art Around Town Tour
Tour the various public artworks around town and learn about the rich and on-going history of the arts in Cook County. Included are works by Birney Quick, Byron Bradley, George Morrison, Hazel Belvo, and Betsy Bowen, among others.
Bookbinding Studio Tour
Scott Husby has been a conservation bookbinder since the 1970s, and has worked at the Library of Congress, the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Smithsonian, and also served as the rare books conservator for Princeton University. Participants will have the chance to visit Scott’s hand bookbindery and learn about his more than 40-year career. Scott will showcase the tools, equipment, and materials used in making hand-bound books as well as an assortment of historical bookbinding models.
Catered Food
The Art Colony can work with your group to organize light refreshments provided by local Grand Marais businesses for an additional $40 fee, including but not limited to your choice of:
- Wine or Non-alcoholic Drink and Dessert
- Drink of Choice and World’s Best Donuts (seasonally available)
- Drink of Choice and Cheese/Cracker/Fruit Tray

Interested groups should contact the Art Colony at info@grandmaraisartcolony.org to outline a class and possible dates.
Once groups commit to a date for their event they will put down a 25% nonrefundable deposit. The remainder of the fee is due 45 days from the class start date, at which time there are no refunds given. Should groups cancel prior to the 45 day timeframe they will receive a 75% refund.
